PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an amplifying optical fiber doped with rare earth elements capable of maximizing gain medium efficiency in a specific gain configuration. SOLUTION : The present invention relates to an amplifying optical fiber having a central core and an optical cladding surrounding the central core wherein the central core is based on a silica matrix including nanoparticles composed of a matrix material including doping ions of at least one of an rare earth element. The matrix of the nanoparticle is selected to assist rare earth solubility and dispersion, and to assist an amplification process. Furthermore, the present invention relates to optical amplifier and an optical laser including the optical fiber according to the present application. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method of preparing the nanoparticles, a method of manufacturing the optical fiber according to the present application, and the use of the optical fiber.
