PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a producing technology of niobium monooxide having a large specific surface area suitable as a capacitor material, and composed of fine particles. SOLUTION : A method for producing niobium monooxide which produces niobium monooxide by reduction firing niobium pentaoxide or niobium dioxide comprises wet mixing and firing niobium pentaoxide or niobium dioxide and a salt containing a rare earth element, and after the firing, mixing the niobium oxide in the state that the rare earth element is doped at niobium atom positions with a reducing agent and subjecting the mixture to a reduction firing treatment.
