PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To substantially improve discharge characteristics at low temperatures and discharge characteristics at large current, for a nickel hydride storage battery using for a negative electrode a hydrogen storage alloy with Mg or the like contained in a rare-earth metal/nickel group hydrogen storage alloy. SOLUTION : In the nickel hydride storage battery provided with a positive electrode, a negative electrode using the hydrogen storage alloy, and alkaline electrolyte solution, one containing at least rare-earth element, Mg, and Ni, with an intensity ratio IA/IBof a greatest peak intensity IAappearing within the range of 2[!theta!]=31° to 33° to a greatest peak intensity IBappearing within the range of 2[!theta!]=40° to 44° in an X-ray diffraction measurement with Cu-Kα rays as an X-ray source of 0.1 or more and with a mol ratio of magnesium to a total volume of the rare-earth element and magnesium of 0.3 or more is used as the hydrogen storage alloy.
