PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst for cleaning an exhaust gas which can sufficiently clean HC components desorbed by raising a desorbing temperature for adsorbed HC components. SOLUTION : The catalyst for cleaning the exhaust gas arranged in an exhaust passage of an engine is provided with a honeycomb-shaped carrier and a catalyst layer 6 formed on the surface of the cell wall 5 of the honeycomb-shaped carrier. The catalyst layer 6 is laminated with at least two of a zeolite layer 11 containing zeolite and a cleaning layer 12 containing a catalytic noble metal. The zeolite layer 11 is located in the side of the cell wall 5 nearer than that of the cleaning layer 12. The catalyst layer 6 contains an alkaline earth metal, and an amount of the alkaline earth metal content in the cleaning layer 12 is 10 or more and 30 or less mass% to the total of the alkaline earth metal contained in the catalyst layer 6.
