PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To make a substantial improvement of lamp lifetime by controlling chemical reaction between a rare earth metal and an electrode enclosed in a discharge envelope. SOLUTION : A coil for cooling 10 is wound around an end part of electrode 7b, 8b, and a coil for cooling 11 is wound from a middle part of electrode 7b, 8b to a welding zone of the same. Further, an oxide of rare earth metalDy2O3comprising a compound of rare earth metal and halogen (metal halide) to be enclosed in the discharge envelope, is loaded in a clearance of the coil 11 and the electrode 7b, 8b. As Dy2O3 is loaded, rare earth metal vapor does not reach plug bodies 7a, 8a made of Nb, and substitution reaction does not occur. COPYRIGHT : (C)2010, JPO&INPIT
