PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a river purification system which is used for a river direct purification method, and accumulates sludge, generated by purification, from a sludge discharge groove to a sludge discharge tank by tractive force to remove the sludge. SOLUTION : In the river purification system, a filter medium 2, the sludge discharge groove 3, and the sludge discharge tank 4 are installed in the channel 1 of a river to purify water. The filter medium 2 is provided with a predetermined length so as to come into contact with at least either one of the banks of the river. The sludge discharge groove 3 is provided on a river bed 5 under the filter medium 2. The plane angle between the sludge discharge groove 3 and the bank is made acute, and the distance to the bank is made longer than the width of a filter medium 2 laid portion. The sludge discharge tank 4 is provided so as to come into contact with the bank and connected to the sludge discharge groove 3. Organic matter and ammonia are decomposed by biological slime formed by bacteria growth on the filter medium 2. Sludge comprising the surplus biological slime fell onto the river bed 5 by being peeled off or the like, and earth and sand are swept to the sludge discharge groove 3 and then from the sludge discharge groove 3 to the sludge discharge tank 4 by the tractive force caused by the reduction of the cross section of a passage due to the installation of the filter medium 2, and then the sludge and the earth and sand are removed from the sludge discharge tank 4.
