PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for efficiently separating and collecting a rare earth metal containing little amount of impurities from a waste such as a rare-earth magnet that is discharged in large quantities, with a simple treatment of few steps and with little energy consumption.
SOLUTION : When electrolyzing a rare earth metal in a molten salt, this collecting method includes : partitioning an anode 5 from a cathode 6 with a bipolar electrode type diaphragm 1 made from a rare earth metal alloy to form an anode chamber 3 and a cathode chamber 4; electrolyzing the molten metal by applying voltage between the anode 5 and the cathode 6 while supplying ions REn+ of the rare earth metal to an anode chamber 3 side to make the rare earth metal RE diffuse and transmit in the bipolar electrode type diaphragm 1; depositing the rare earth metal or the alloy thereof on the surface of the cathode 6; and collecting the rare earth metal.
