PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To enable obtaining of a sufficient cycle lifetime even in the case an amount of alkaline electrolytic solution is reduced in an alkaline storage battery using a hydrogen storage alloy having a crystal structure of Ce2Ni7type, CeNi3type and similar types. SOLUTION : The alkaline storage battery is provided with a positive electrode 1, a negative electrode 2 using the hydrogen storage alloy, and the alkaline electrolytic solution. The hydrogen storage alloy which contains at least a rare earth element, Mg, and Ni, and in which in an x-ray diffraction measurement, an intensity ratio IA/IB between the strongest peak intensity IA to appear within a range of 2[!theta!]=30° to 34° and the strongest peak intensity IB to appear within 2[!theta!]=40° to 44° is 0.5 or more, is used. An increased amount (Wa-Wo) of a weight ratio Wa of oxygen contained in the hydrogen storage alloy after the alkaline storage battery is activated, and a weight ratio Wo of oxygen contained in this hydrogen storage alloy is made less than 0.9 wt%, or this weight ratio Wa is made less than 1.0 wt%.
