PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare earth element-added optical fiber which can reduce an influence of photo darkening by controlling rare earth addition distribution and has high performance with low loss and high oscillation efficiency.
SOLUTION : The rare earth element-added optical fiber is comprised of a core and a clad surrounding the same, and the core is added with rare earth elements. Assuming that electric field distribution at energizing wavelength is Pp(r), electric field distribution at wavelength of amplified spontaneous emission and/or stimulated emission guiding in the core is Ps(r) and rare earth element addition distribution is D(r) (mass% in unit), relationship of the formula (1) (where, r0 is the center of the core and rc is a core diameter) can be satisfied.
