PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare gas fluorescent lamp having an optical output increased, without having to increase the input power.
SOLUTION : The rare gas fluorescent lamp has a phosphor layer 2 on the inner face of an arc tube 1, in which a rare gas to generate excimer molecules by dielectric barrier discharge is filled, and has an electrode 3 at both poles for exciting discharge phenomenon to the rare gas; a dielectric is interposed in between at least one of the electrodes at both poles 3 and the rare gas of the electrodes; and a region between the electrodes 3 at both poles and extending in the tube axis direction is made a light-outgoing part 4. The phosphor layer 2 is formed throughout the all circumference on the inner face of the arc tube 1, and the thickness of the phosphor layer 2 located at the light-outgoing part 4 is smaller than that of the phosphor layer 2, located at other than the light-outgoing part 4. Furthermore, a first phosphor layer 20 is formed on the inner face of the arc tube 1 located at other than the light outgoing part 4, and a second phosphor layer 21 is formed on the surface of the first phosphor layer 20 and on the inner face of the arc tube 1 located at the light-outgoing part 4.
