PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for synthesizing a lithium iron complex oxide having a novel crystal structure and a novel composition and having a possibility of acting as an inexpensive and high-capacity cathode active material for nonaqueous secondary batteries. SOLUTION : It is possible to provide a novel lithium- and iron-containing complex oxide of monoclinic system belonging to the space group P12_1/c1 and represented by the formula : LixFe2-yLyO5 (wherein 2.95≤x≤5; 0≤y≤1.8; and the element L is at least one member selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth elements; transition metals except iron; rare earth elements; group IIIb elements; and group IVb elements) by ion exchange between lithium ions and sodium in a sodium- and iron-containing complex oxide represented by the formula : NaxFe2-yLyO5 (wherein 2.95≤x≤5; 0≤y≤1.8; and the element L is at least one member selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth elements, transition metals except iron, rare earth metals, group IIIb elements, and group IVb elements).
