The field of the invention is electric fencing. The problem to be solved by the invention is restricting the level of shock obtainable from an earth wire return system without limiting the shock available from a ground wire return system in a single energiser. The solution is the incorporation of an additional earth terminal (9) on the energiser which incorporates a protective impedance (10) in series with it. The earth terminal incorporating the protective impedance can be connected to the wire of an earth wire return electric fence system (8), and the other earth terminal (4) connected to a wire from the ground return system (13) of the electric fence installation. This invention provides control of the maximum current through an earth return current path independent of the current through the ground return current path in an electric fence system.
