Tagged barrier coatings 12, including environmental barrier coatings, thermal barrier coatings, or a combination thereof having from about 0.01 mol% to about 30 mol% of a taggant 26 added thereto. The barrier coating may comprise more than one layer and different taggants may be added to each layer. The taggant may comprise a rare earth metal or a compound thereof The taggant changes the colour of the coating. The coating may be used on turbine components.
