PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an efficient luminescent material that produces a different emission from rare earth elements and can shift the emission peak to a longer or shorter wavelength range. SOLUTION : The luminescent material for ultraviolet or visible light excitation contains a cupric silicate compound activated by Eu. The luminescent material for ultraviolet or visible light excitation may alternatively contain a cupric germanate or germanate-silicate compound activated by Mn or Eu.
