A discharge lamp comprises an airtight container (1) having a light-emitting unit (11) in which a space is formed and seal portions (12a, 12b) formed at least on one end of the light-emitting unit, a discharge medium containing metallic halide and rare gas encapsulated in the light-emitting unit, metal foil (31) attached to the seal portion by sealing, and a pair of electrodes (32) one ends of which are superimposed on and connected to the metal foil and the other ends of which are provided in such a manner that they are led into the space of the light-emitting unit and arranged in opposition to each other. A concavity (312) is formed on at least a portion of the back surface side of the metal foil on which the electrodes are superimposed. A compression distortion (9) is formed on the seal portion.
