PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for efficiently producing a finely particulate phosphor having a uniform grain diameter of 1, 000 nm or less. SOLUTION : The method comprises allowing an yttrium compound to react with a rare earth metal compound other than yttrium in the presence of a solvent which is a monohydric or dihydric alcohol represented by the formula (1) : R1(CnH2nO)mR2 or a derivative thereof and a solvent which is a polyhydric alcohol having 3-6 hydroxy groups represented by the formula (2) : R3(OH)xR4 or a derivative thereof, wherein (1) n represents an integer of 1-10; m represents an integer of 1-100; R1 represents a group selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a hydroxy group, a hydrocarbon group, an alkyl ether group, an alkyl ester group, and a halogen atom; R2 represents a group selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, and a halogenated alkyl group; (2) R3 represents a 3-10C alkyl group; x represents an integer of 3-6; and R4 represents a group selected from the group consisting of an alkyl ether group, an alkyl ester group, and a halogen atom.
