PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen storage alloy achieving high capacity and long life. SOLUTION : The hydrogen storing alloy contains an intermetallic compound represented by general formula 1 : (R1-aDa)TxSnyMzXα as the main phase. R : at least one selected from rare earth elements including Y; D : at least one selected from Zr, Hf and Ti; at least one selected from Fe, Co, Mn, Cu and Cr; M; at least one selected from V, Nb, Ta, Mo and W; X; at least one selected from Al, Ga, Zn, Sn, Si, B, C and P; 0≤a≤0.3; 0.2≤x≤1.1; 5≤y≤2.8; 0≤z≤0.5; 0≤α≤0.5; 1.5≤y+z+α≤2.8 (atomic ratio). A nickel hydrogen secondary battery equipped with a negative electrode made of this alloy, a positive electrode, and an alkaline electrolyte achieves high capacity and long life.
