PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a photoluminescent phosphor comprising an oxynitride phosphor composed mainly of α-sialon activated by a rare earth element, which realizes high brightness of a white LED using a blue LED as a light source, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION : The α-sialon-based oxynitride with a regulated content of a metallic impurity other than its constituents gives the aimed photoluminescent phosphor which realizes high brightness of the white LED using the blue LED as a light source. The adjustment of the oxygen content of a nitrogen-containing silane compound and/or an amorphous silicon nitride powder as a raw starting material and addition of a previously synthesized α-sialon powder to the raw material powder are important requisites in the manufacture of the aimed α-sialon-based oxynitride photoluminescent phosphor.
