PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing tantalum or niobium powder for a capacitor. SOLUTION : The method for producing tantalum (Ta) or niobium (Nb) powder for a capacitor in an electrolytic reduction reactor including an anode, a cathode and a molten salt comprises : a stage where, in a molten salt composed of the halide of at least one metal selected from alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals, and alkali metal oxide, the alkali metal oxide is subjected to primary electrolytic reduction at the cathode, and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) or niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) is partially reduced with the electrolytically reduced alkali metal, so as to obtain tantalum or niobium oxide expressed by Ta2O(5-y) or Nb2O(5-y) (wherein, y=2.5 to 4.5); and a stage where the halide of at least one metal selected from alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals is subjected to primary electrolytic reduction at the cathode, and is brought into secondary reduction reaction with tantalum or niobium oxide expressed by Ta2O(5-y) or Nb2O(5-y) (wherein, y=2.5 to 4.5), so as to obtain tantalum or niobium powder.
