PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a luminescent glass (fluorescent substance) that can be conveniently produced and has good heat resistance and weather resistance. SOLUTION : A fluorescent substance having good heat resistance and resistance to ultraviolet ray is obtained by activating a rare earth element in glass containing an alkaline earth metal as a principal component. Specifically, the fluorescent glass contains, in terms of mol%, 5 to 50% SiO2, 10 to 50% Al2O3, and 5 to 70% M (wherein M is at least one type selected from among MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, and Y2O3).
