PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a stabilized tetragonal zirconia microparticle which requires no high-temperature treatment, shows a high crystallinity, has an average particle size of ≤10 nm and can be used as a ceramic for a structural material or a solid electrolyte.
SOLUTION : The stabilized zirconia microparticle has a basic structure represented by the formula : (1-x)ZrO2-xY2O3 (wherein x is a number within the range of 0.02-0.1; and Y is a rare earth metal containing Sc, Y or Yb). The stabilized zirconia microparticle is produced by adjusting the pH of a mixed aqueous solution of rare earth metal ions such as yttrium and zirconium ions to ≥8 with an aqueous alkaline solution and subjecting it to a hydrothermal reaction at 300-400°C for a short time using subcritical or supercritical water as a medium. The obtained stabilized zirconia microparticle has a primary particle size of ≤10 nm, contains few residual hydroxyl groups, shows no agglomeration and has a high crystallinity.
