PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a manufacturing method of magnetic powder containing nitrogen having high coercive force and a narrow coercive force distribution regardless of an extremely small particle size and a spherical or elliptical shape, and to provide a magnetic recording medium having a narrow coercive force distribution using the magnetic powder.
SOLUTION : When manufacturing spherical or elliptical magnetic powder that has at least iron and nitrogen as components where an average particle size containing at least an Fe16N2 phase is 10-20 nm and is nitriding iron magnetic powder containing rare earth elements, aluminum, and/or silicon, a goethite particle that becomes a raw material is manufactured and is subjected to hydrothermal treatment in advance, thus obtaining a goethite particle having a narrow particle size distribution and a smooth surface. The nitriding iron powder using the goethite particle as a raw material has a narrow coercive force distribution and SFD as a magnetic paint film becomes appropriate.
