PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an amplifying optical fiber for an L band and an optical fiber amplifier, by which an increase of a transmission loss and the deterioration of a hydrogen-proof property can be suppressed. SOLUTION : An optical fiber amplifier 1 carries out the optical amplification of signal light inputted into an input terminal 1a and outputs the optically amplified signal light from an output terminal 1b, and is equipped with : an amplifying optical fiber 10; an excitation light source 21, an excitation light source 22, an optical coupler 31; and an optical coupler 32. The amplifying optical fiber 10 has a core region and a cladding region whose refractive index is lower than that of the core region. The core region and the cladding region are based on silica glass. In the core region, a rare earth element (preferably Er element) and a P element of 2 wt.% or more and 5 wt.% or less are added but Ge is not added. In the cladding region enclosing the core region, an F element is added as a refractive index deterioration agent. COPYRIGHT : (C)2008, JPO&INPIT
