PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : The blackening phenomenon due to the influence of the root discharge lamp by reducing the service life of the high-pressure mercury lamp capable of, and the lamp unit and to provide an image display device. SOLUTION : The high pressure mercury lamp, a main pipe section 15 having a discharge space 13 and the main part 15 and provided on both sides of the tube part 17 and the discharge vessel 23, extending to the inside of the discharge space 13 opposed to each other in both the tube part (17) and sealed to an electrode configuration. In the discharge space 13, a luminescent mercury, rare gas such as xenon, halogen cycle for each halogen gas is sealed. The electrode assembly, the electrode part 27a, 29a and external lead wires made of metal foil, electrode portion 27a at the root of the electrode is extended, the cooling period when turned off, mercury is collected in the vicinity of the root of the electrode to the liquid stored in the coil 43 is provided.
