PURPOSE : A catalyst having a high level of activity and a small quantity of a precious metal supported thereon is provided to reduce efficiently the concentration of CO in hydrogen gas through a water gas shift reaction.
CONSTITUTION : A catalyst for removing carbon monoxide from hydrogen gas is prepared by performing a hydrogen reduction treatment of a base catalyst prepared by supporting platinum and molybdenum onto a support comprising a metal oxide. The hydrogen reduction treatment is performed at a temperature of 300 to 700 deg.C. The support comprising the metal oxide is zirconia, a mixture of zirconia and at least one oxide of rare earth elements, or a composite oxide. The molybdenum supported on the support in the base catalyst is present in the form of a metal or an inorganic compound. A method for the preparation of a catalyst for removing carbon monoxide from hydrogen gas comprises the steps of : supporting platinum onto a support comprising a metal oxide; subsequently supporting molybdenum onto the support to form a base catalyst; and subjecting the base catalyst to a hydrogen reduction treatment at a temperature between 300 deg.C and 700 deg.C.
