PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To achieve more oscillation wavelengths in a fiber laser exciting a fiber having a core to which a rare earth element ion is added with a laser diode to generate laser beams. SOLUTION : A GaN-based laser diode 11 excites the fiber 13 having the core to which Er3+ is added. Laser beams 15 are generated by the transition of 4S3/2 → 4I15/2, or 2H9/2 → 4I13/2 in the fiber 13.
