PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To suppress the temperature rise of a Faraday rotator and to secure deterioration prevention of the optical characteristic and reliability of an optical isolator by reducing light absorption of the Faraday rotator of the optical isolator to be used for the light source of a comparatively short wavelength region.
SOLUTION : The Faraday rotator for shortwave light is composed of a garnet substrate and a bismuth-substituted rare earths iron garnet single crystal, and the lattice constant of the bismuth-substituted rare earths iron garnet single crystal is set to 12.56 Å to 12.58 Å. Further, the wavelength of the light made incident on the bismuth-substituted rare earths iron garnet single crystal is set to 1, 030 nm to 1, 090 nm, and the bismuth-substituted rare earths iron garnet single crystal is provided to one face or both faces of the garnet substrate. Further, a light-transmissive plate having a thermal conductivity which is four times or more of the thermal conductivity of the bismuth-substituted rare earths iron garnet single crystal is used instead of the garnet substrate to form the Faraday rotator for shortwave light. Further, the optical isolator is formed by using the Faraday rotator for shortwave light.
