The present invention relates to a method for the synthesis of light aldehyde by the gaseous-phase oxy-dehydrogenation of the corresponding alcohol at a temperature of between 500 and 700°C in adiabatic conditions and in the presence of a metal silver catalyst, characterised in that the oxy-dehydrogenation reaction is carried out in a reactor made of a metal or metal alloy capable of forming a surface layer of chemically inert oxides in nominal operating conditions. More particularly, the metal is selected from titanium, zirconium and tantalum. The metallic alloys include at least 19 wt % or chromium and at least one alloy element selected from aluminium, silicon, manganese, magnesium, wherein the total concentration of said metals is higher than 2 wt %, or selected from the rare earths comprising lanthanum, yttrium, or cerium with a concentration of between 0.1 and 0.5 %
