The invention relates to a coloured pigment of the general formula BiOIaBrbClcMdAe; wherein M is a cation of the alkaline-earth metals, a cation of the earth metals, a cation of the rare earth metals including the lanthanides or a cation of the metals Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Ti, Zr, Hf, Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os or Zn or a mixture of cations of those metals; A is a fluoride, aquoxide, hydroxide, carbonate, silicate, molybdate, tungstate, sulfate, borate or phosphate anion or a mixture of those anions; a is a number from 0.10 to 0.999; preferably from 0.50 to 0.90; b, c, d and e are numbers from 0 to 0.90; preferably from 0.10 to 0.50; a+b+c+d+e=1 and a+b+c<1; to a process for the preparation thereof and to the use thereof in pigmenting high molecular weight organic materials such as surface-coating compositions, plastics and printing inks.
