PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a nitrogen-containing magnetic powder having a high coercitivity even though its particle size is extremely small and it has a spherical shape or on oval shape, and to provide a magnetic recording medium for ensuring maximum characteristic of the nitrogen-containing magnetic powder at the time of using a highly-sensitive head for a reproducing head to optimize the saturated magnetization, which expresses an exceptionally excellent characteristic of output vs. noise ratio (SNR).
SOLUTION : The spherical shape or oval shape magnetic powder comprises at least iron and nitrogen as component elements, includes at least Fe16N2 phase, with its average particle diameter of 10 to 20 nm, further includes rare-earth element, aluminum, and/or silicon, has 159.2 to 318.5 A/m (2, 000 to 4, 000Oe) coercitivity, and 40 to 79 Am2/kg (40 to 79 emu/g) sturated magnetization; and to provide a magnetic recording medium using this.
