PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve greatly life characteristics of a mercury-free metal halide lamp.
SOLUTION : A discharge container 11 is constructed of sealing parts 12a, 12b at the both ends of a discharge space 14 in which discharge medium that contains a halide and rare gas but does not contain mercury is sealed. A positive electrode 3a2 and a negative electrode 3b2 are arranged oppositely in the discharge space 14, and one end of a metal foil 3a1 is jointed to end part of base side of the positive electrode 3a2 and one end of the metal foil 3b1 is jointed to the end part of base side of the negative electrode 3b2. The metal foil 3a1, 3b1 is sealed airtight by the sealing parts 12a, 12b. The other ends of the metal foil 3a2, 3b2 are respectively jointed to external leads 3a3, 3b3 and led outside of the sealing parts 12a, 12b. The direction of current flowing in the discharge container 14 is constant, and the metal foil 3a1 on the positive electrode 3a2 side is made of mainly molybdenum metal and contains rhenium metal 0.5-8 wt.%, and rhenium metal film is coated on the surface of the metal foil 3a1.
