Disclosed is a catalyst for use in the steam reformation, which deposits only a small amount of carbon at a low pressure and a low steam/carbon ratio and has a long service life and high mechanical strength. The catalyst comprises a carrier and ruthenium (an active metal) supported on the carrier in an amount of 0.3 to 5%% by mass relative to the amount of the carrier, wherein the carrier is produced by supporting an oxide of a rare earth element and an oxide of an alkali earth element on α-alumina having a pore volume of pores each having a pore size of 50 nm or more of 0.2 to 1.0 ml/g, and the oxide of a rare earth element and the oxide of an alkali earth element are supported in amounts of 2 to 25%% by mass and 0.1 to 15%% by mass, respectively, relative to the amount of α-alumina.© KIPO & WIPO 2009
