The invention relates to a covering, sleeve and sheath consisting of bacterial cellulose and to the use thereof. When used in conjunction with medical equipment that emits high-energy rays and sound waves, the invention permits the development of existing therapeutic and diagnostic methods or enhances the application options for said methods. The invention can be used in cosmetic, medical, diagnostic and pharmaceutical methods. The coverings, sleeves and sheaths consisting of a fibre cross-linked hydrated layer are preferably used in or according to medical and commercial treatment methods, to transfer substances and to transfer high-energy rays or waves, or to protect against said rays or waves. The re-usability of the coverings, sleeves and sheaths, even when incorporated into devices, permits both economic and material savings to be made.
