Disclosed is a rare-earth-doped core/multiclad fiber which has a core doped with a rare earth element and a clad multilayer surrounding the core, wherein the outermost layer of the clad multilayer comprises a polymer clad. The fiber has a polygonal inner clad. The boundary between the second-outermost layer and the outermost layer of the clad multilayer does not have a two-fold rotary symmetry. Thus, it becomes possible to provide a rare-earth-doped core/multiclad fiber which has a low skew, is inexpensive, and can be used in an optical amplifier or a fiber laser.
