PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline storage battery having a high energy density, good charging efficiency even at high temperature and improved high- temperature characteristics. SOLUTION : This alkaline storage battery comprises a positive electrode containing, dominantly, nickel hydroxide, a negative electrode, a separator and an alkaline electrolyte. A heavy earth element compound selected from the groups consisting of Er(erbium), Tm(thulium), Yb(ytterbium) and Lu(lutetium) are added independently or in plural to the alkaline electrolyte.
