PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To prevent defects resulting from the connection of a post-fitted current consumer to a battery from occurring when the battery is installed for supplying a power to a starter during the re-starting of an engine. SOLUTION : This controller for a vehicle comprises : an automatic stop means for automatically stopping the engine when the requirements for idling stop are satisfied; a re-starting means for re-starting the engine by driving the starter when the requirements for re-start are satisfied during the idling stop caused by automatically stopping the engine; a first battery for supplying a power to the current consumer of the vehicle during the idling stope; a second battery for supplying a power to the starter during the re-start of the engine; and a discharge current detection means for detecting the discharge current of the second battery. The automatic stop means does not automatically stop the engine irrespective of whether the requirements for idling stop are satisfied when the discharge current detection means detects the discharge current beyond a predetermined threshold for automatic stop prohibition.
