PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal halide lamp that does not essentially use mercury which has a large environmental burden and has nearly equal electric property and luminous property to those lamps which are filled with mercury, and a metal halide lamp lighting device and an illumination device having the same. SOLUTION : The lamp comprises an airtight container 1, a pair of electrodes 2, 2 sealed in the airtight container, and a discharge medium which contains a first halide mainly consisting of a halide of sodium Na and scandium Sc, a second halide that consists mainly of a halide of one kind or plural kinds of halides of metals selected from the group of magnesium Mg, iron Fe, cobalt Co, chromium Cr, zinc Zn, nickel Ni, manganese Mn, aluminum Al, antimony Sb, beryllium Be, rhenium Re, gallium Ga, titanium Ti, zirconium Zr, and hafnium Hf, and has a vapor pressure of 5 atmospheric pressures or less during lighting, and a rare gas, so that the discharge medium does not essentially contain mercury.
