[PROBLEMS] To provide an extractant for rare metals or platinum-group metals which has a completely new structure unlike conventional extractants for rare metals or platinum-group metals and has excellent extraction performance; and a method of extracting a rare metal/platinum-group metal with the extractant. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] The extractant for rare metals or platinum-group metals is a solution obtained by dissolving a cyclic phenol sulfide represented by the general formula (1) in Chemical formula (1). A solution containing some of rare metals or platinum-group metals dissolved therein is brought into contact with the sulfide solution. The rare metals or platinum-group metals migrate to the cyclic phenol sulfide solution. Thus, the rare metals or platinum-group metals are extracted.
