PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a tea leaf selecting method intended for offering an antiallergic material usable for various food and drink and cosmetics, and effectively using rare tea leaves to be the raw material of the antiallergic material. SOLUTION : This tea leaf selecting method for selecting rare tea leaves which contain methylated catechin comprises a first process of measuring an amount of methylated catechin in tea leaves, and selecting tea leaves which contain methylated catechin of prescribed or above concentration, and a second process of evaluating flavor of the tea leaves which are selected in the first process and contain methylated catechin of prescribed or above concentration, and selecting tea leaves excellent in flavor. Furthermore, the method comprises a third process of evaluating the appearance of the tea leaves which are selected in the second process and excellent in flavor, and selecting tea leaves excellent in appearance, as a raw material for producing food and drink having antiallergic effect, and a fourth process of selecting tea leaves which are not selected in the second process and/or tea leaves which are not selected in the third process, as a raw material for producing essence or powder having antiallergic effect.
