PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing magnesium alloy by which crystal grains of magnesium alloy can be refined and mechanical properties thereof can be improved inexpensively and in a simple process, and to provide magnesium alloy.
SOLUTION : Boron oxide (B2O3) is added to the molten metal of alloy containing as a principal element magnesium such as Mg-Al alloy, Mg-RE (misch metal) alloy or Mg-Al-Ti alloy, and thereafter, the molten metal to which the boron oxide is added is cooled and solidified. The boron oxide is reduced in the molten metal to be a boron simple substance, the boron simple substance forms a compound with the element in the alloy, and the compound forms a nuclei generating point upon solidification. In this way, the crystal grains of the solidified magnesium are refined.
