PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas that is excellent in heat resistance with suppressed sintering of noble metals. SOLUTION : The catalyst 1 for purification of exhaust gas contains a heat-resistant carrier 2 selected from Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2 and TiO2, a noble metal 4 selected from Pt, Pd and Rh that is supported on the outer surface of the carrier 2 and clathrated with a clathrating material containing a component of the carrier 2 with at least part of it exposed, and a rare earth element selected from Ce, La, Zr and Ba.
