PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide materials for producing protective films of plasma display panels with their ionic strength enhanced by shortening electric discharge time delay and improving temperature dependence, as well as its manufacturing method, protective films formed by this method and PDPs equipped with the protective film. SOLUTION : This invention provides a material of protective films containing magnesium oxide single crystal doped with rear earth 2.0×10-5 to 1.0×10-2 parts by mass on the basis of one part by mass of MgO, a method of producing the magnesium oxide single crystal through crystallization at about 2, 800°C, a protective film formed by this method, and a PDP including the protective film.
