PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a phosphor comprising a material different from that of a conventional rare earth activated sialon phosphor or oxide phosphor.
SOLUTION : This phosphor comprises an AAlSiON2 crystal (A is an element selected from Li, Na and K) which emits fluorescence under excitation energy from an excitation source or a solid solution crystal of the AAlSiON2, wherein the AAlSiON2 crystal or the solid solution crystal of the AAlSiON2 contains at least an element M (M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mn, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb). The phosphor is produced by firing a starting material mixture of oxides, oxynitrides or the like including metals of M, A, Al and Si in a temperature range of 1, 200-2, 200°C in an atmosphere of nitrogen under 0.1-100 MPa. A lighting apparatus and an image display device including the phosphor are further provided.
