PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen-absorbing alloy that can be effectively used for a heat pump and a negative electrode active material in the negative electrode of a nickel-hydrogen storage battery, by improving the rare earth-Mg-Ni hydrogen absorbing alloy so as to reduce the hysteresis between the pressure changes during the hydrogen absorption and during the hydrogen desorption. SOLUTION : A hydrogen absorbing alloy is provided that is represented by the general formula Ln1-xMgxNiyAz, where : Ln is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ga, Zr, Ti, and rare-earth elements including Y; A is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn, V, Cr, Nb, Al, Ga, Zn, Sn, Cu, Si, P, and B; and x, y, and z satisfy the following conditions 0.05≤x≤0.25, 0
