PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of efficiently recovering a rare earth oxide with high purity from a grinding waste liquid containing a rare earth element by a simple process. SOLUTION : The rare earth oxide is recovered from the waste liquid containing the rare earth element by a process containing following steps (1)-(6). (1) The rare earth element is dissolved in a liquid by mixing the liquid containing the rare earth element with an acid and heating. (2) An undissolved material is removed from the resultant rare earth element solution. (3) A soluble carbonate or hydrogen carbonate or oxalic acid is added to the resultant solution to turn the rare earth element in the solution to rare earth carbonate or rare earth oxalate. (4) The rare earth carbonate or the rare earth oxalate is separated from the resultant slurry and is (5) fired and (6) recovered as the rare earth oxide. COPYRIGHT : (C)2004, JPO
