A catalyst and process using the catalyst for opening cyclic paraffins are described. The catalyst comprises a Group VIII metal component, a molecular sieve, a refractory inorganic oxide component and optionally a modifier component. Examples of the molecular sieve are MAPSOs, SAPOs, UZM-8 and UZM-15. Preferred Group VIII metals include platinum, palladium and rhodium while alumina is a preferred inorganic oxide. Finally, examples of the optional modifier are niobrium, titanium and rare earth elements such as ytterbium.
