Provided is a method for manufacturing a magnetic disc, which has at least a magnetic recording layer on a substrate (1) and is to be used for vertical magnetic recording. In a step of forming on a substrate (1) the magnetic recording layer, which is composed of a ferromagnetic layer (5) having a granular structure and an exchange energy control layer (7) composed of a lamination layer formed on the ferromagnetic layer (5), at least the exchange energy control layer (7) is formed by sputtering in a rare gas atmosphere having a mass larger than that of argon gas. The rare gas having a mass larger than that of argon gas is, for instance, krypton (Kr) gas. The exchange energy control layer (7) is, for instance, a lamination layer of a first layer including Co or a Co alloy and a second layer including palladium (Pd) or platinum (Pt).
