PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a lighting equipment and an image display device each using a green fluorescent substance which has higher green brightness than those of conventional rare earth element-activated sialon fluorescent substances and has more excellent durability than those of conventional oxide fluorescent substances. SOLUTION : This fluorescent substance used in a lighting equipment having a luminous light source and a fluorescent substance or in an image display device having an exciting source and a fluorescent substance is characterized by having a β type Si3N4 crystal structure-having nitride or oxynitride crystal phase obtained by solid-dissolving a metal element M (M is one or more element selected from Mn, Ce, and Eu) in β type Si3N4 crystal structure-having nitride or oxynitride crystal, and emitting fluorescent light having peaks in a wavelength range of 500 to 600 nm by irradiating with a luminous light source or an exciting source.
