Provided is a method for manufacturing a rare earth permanent magnet having on the surface an Al film, which includes Mg exhibiting excellent salt water resistance. The rare earth permanent magnet has the Al film, which is formed on the surface by deposition and includes Mg. At the time of cooling the magnet which is at a high temperature of 160°C or higher after a deposition step is completed in the processing chamber of a deposition apparatus, the magnet is rapidly cooled at a cooling speed of 10°C/min or higher until the magnet temperature reaches at least 60°C.
