PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a mercury-free backlight device using a rare-gas discharge lamp, with brightness unevenness restrained while reducing the thickness of a case, and with large illuminance at a light-irradiating face. SOLUTION : The backlight device is provided with a plurality of straight-tube light source lamps in parallel with and separate from each other in a rectangular box-shaped case with a reflecting body arranged inside, and a sheet body arranged so as to cover an opening of the case, forming a light-irradiation part equipped with an optical correction function. The light source lamp is made constituted of an arc tube with rare gas sealed in, and a pair of external electrodes arranged on its outside face so as to be extended in a tube axis direction, while diffusion plates, having openings in correspondence with separated parts between the rare-gas discharge lamps between the rare-gas discharge lamps and the sheet body, is arranged. It is desirable if a plurality of nearly strip-shaped diffusion plates are arrayed along the lamps or, if a diffusion plate is structured of a platy body having enough width to cover the plurality of rare-gas discharge lamps and with openings formed.
